About
Animal Visuals is a project of Mark L. Middleton. This site was originally launched in 2009 to display various internet projects advocating for animal protection, including:
- An animated slaughter counter that visualizes the rate of slaughter of cows, pigs, and chickens in the United States.
- The Virtual Battery Cage, which allowed viewers to see the inside of a battery cage from the perspective of a hen.
- Farm Rescue, a game on Facebook about rescuing battery hens, and a parody of Zynga's popular FarmVille game.
- A maps application that showed the location of undercover investigations on farms throughout the United States, overlaid with the status of Ag-gag laws that were introduced in order to suppress these investigations.
- A graphing application created for Faunalytics / (The Humane Research Council at the time) to visualize the results of their long-running Animal Tracker Survey This is still live on faunalytics.org.
- A project to estimate the number of animals killed through both slaughter and plant harvest in order to obtain 1 million human edible calories in 8 food categories.
Most of these projects were done using Macromedia / Adobe Flash, which lost support in modern browsers in the late half of the 2010's, and so these projects became defunct, and at the time, I didn't have the time to update them. I'm currently working to bring many of these projects back using current web technologies, starting with the Slaughter Counter.
